Biography of Candace Hill — "Osawuskiskwew"
"We are spiritual beings having a 'human experience'."
First and foremost, Candace — Osawuskiskwew (brown bear woman) — is a proud Mother and Kookum (grandmother in Cree). She has lived a deeply diverse life, straddling two worlds: one as a spirit talker, healer, and medicine keeper, and the other as an international natural health activist.
As a bicultural Métis woman of mixed heritage — Scottish, Irish, English, Cree, Lakota, Saulteaux — she walks in the ancient ways of her Kokums. She was born in Manitoba, known to the First Peoples as "Manito Api" — "That Place That Creator Sits."
She is a visionary, spirit talker, storyteller, singer, drummer, sweat lodge keeper, and Sundancer. She believes knowledge is meant to be given away.
Began the Art of Seeing at the age of 15, a photographer, a certified nutritionist for over 30 years, an herbalist, and a practitioner of alternative and Traditional Indigenous Medicine. Candace is also a family & community counsellor.
She founded her consulting practice, Walking in Balance, over 24 years ago and has since spoken across Canada, the United States, and Europe — including France and Scotland — and most recently, Mongolia.
In 2018 she published her first book, She Who Wears Moccasins and Carries a Big Stick. Her second manuscript, drawn from her experience as an international health activist exposing the WHO and Health Canada, is anticipated for publication this coming year.
When I'm Not Working . . .
You'll find me with a cup of tea and a good conversation, out in nature following whatever trail calls to me, or thinking about the next generation and what we are leaving behind for them.
I believe…
That ancient wisdom and modern life can walk hand in hand.
That every person carries within them the seeds of their own healing.
That community, honest conversation, movement and ceremony are medicine.
That it is never too late to come home to yourself.
